CSPAN -- BOOK TALK

Sure CSPAN Book Talk is not as sexy as the Daily Show.Still I'm happy to have this record of the first reading for Crazy LikeUs at The Booksmith. The co-owner of the store Praveen Madan has been asupporter both of this book and the San Francisco Writers' Grotto.

    Dear Mr. Ethan Watters:
Today I cried after watching a re-run of Booksmith. I watched in awe to hear you speak about western influences and mental illness. Eureka there are others who feel like I do.

I now feel hope. There is a long history of "mental illness" in my own family. I have memories of pure horror in dealing with mental hospitals, physicians, orderlies, nurses in the 60's on to present day in Canada and the USA. I have fought my own demons and have come to accept my own place in the world. I have had many labels slapped on me to make others feel comfortable and know which drug to administer.
Since 1996 I have been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, depression, manic-depression, Irritable bowel, interstitial cystitis, restless leg syndrome, unexplained pain syndrome, unexplained fatigue, spasms, numbing, tingling etc.
In 2007 I took control after years of powerful drugs. I am no longer taking any medications, including a daily injectable. I am symptom free by following a diet that contains 2 simple things: 1. eliminate food sensitivities and 2. eliminate MSG (free processed glutamate acid), aspartame and other chemicals in our processed food that are known to effect neurons in the brain.( these known toxins make food allergies/sensitivities worse)
I am no longer a money maker for the medical community and the drug companies.
Members in my own family and others in our society, including the military will continue to suffer because of a health system that relies solely on conventional medicine, brain washing society into believing that only drugs can help folks, especially the 'crazy ones'.
I let the medical community control me. Not any more and for that I am healthier.
I have yet to decide whether or not I can read your book at this time. It may stir up too many painful memories.
Power to all those who have the courage and fore thought to take on the big drug companies!
    It is time for change.

    Sincerely,
